Is it time for 'Reform'

Started by: Tommy Two Stroke (15427)

That is a reform of the political system which is failing us, that system we have got means that we invariably get a Labour or Conservative government, and at present the policies of both of those political parties are the same, if as expected Kier Starmer and the Labour Party sweep into power later on this year, there will be no change to the status quo, as regards everything !!!!

Nothing will change

We are a proudly democratic society and if the population as a whole want significant change they will as a whole vote for a party that promises significant change.

It seems the population never do

Stardelta

That is because the 'system' is wrong, people know that a vote for a party other than Labour or Conservative, is just going to 'help' the Labour or Conservative parties, so what is the point, they might has well vote for Labour or Conservative.

I am in favour of Proportional Representation despite it's faults.

I am old enough to remember the time when Labour was a Socialist Party and proud to sing the Red Flag at the party conference!

Now gone, thanks to Tory Tony and his cronies Campbell and Mendleson.

Tonker sent me a video of an asylum seeker in Spain, The asylum seeker was attacking a woman and when the police arrived he was using the woman as a shield, The police did not use any sort of negotiation with the man or offer a chance to become a Christian and pray to Jesus for his sins and 5 shots ended the event with the lady unharmed and the asylum seeker on the floor dead,
I would for a party who offered such as that,,

If you agree with unarmed individuals being shot dead by the authorities Tom perhaps you should consider leaving the UK living in a country like China, Russia or North Korea.

I don't read ratsdelta comments but I'm sure he would not agree with instant justice in this way but, Reform in this way would make many think twice before committing offences , The party that offers this quick way to guarantee none repeated incidence from the offender , would get my vote and I dare say many more votes too, not ratsdelta's thou, he likes criminal minded invaders,

I have never been keen on the idea of the Proportional Representation (PR) type of elections, because it can lead to 'Hung Parliaments' and I hate hung parliaments, after the 2017 cock up by Theresa May we had a hung parliament for two and a half years until Boris finally persuaded Jeremy to agree to the call of an early general election, and I never thought that the 'fixed term' parliament thing was a good idea either.

In 2011 the UK voted in a referendum on introducing the PR system, but the idea was overwhelmingly defeated, but saying that the voter turnout was very low.

BUT, when you now have the Labour and Conservative Parties both having the same useless policies, then for me it is the same has having an hung parliament, because nothing changes, and the problems carry on being problems

If PR was introduced, maybe that could change things

Yes, Ron Jeremy would be a leading figure in any hung parliament!

But that is the point I am making, these minority parties don't get anywhere, and you are intimating about the right leaning parties such has Reform and UKIP, but on the other side on the left leaning side, there was the SDP and they got nowhere, so whether you are left or right, socialist or capitalist, it always just comes back down to same the choice between Labour and Conservative.

Millions of voters who vote for minority parties don't get represented in Parliament because of the current system of "First past the post".

A change is long overdue.

Under the present 'first past the post' voting system, a political party needs to be getting about 20% of the vote before they start winning seats in parliament, so in a general election if 19% of the public vote for a political party, they get no seats in parliament, but as in the 2019 general election the Conservatives got 43.6% of the vote, which gave them 365 seats with an 80 seat majority.

That cannot be right.

It is alright telling people to vote, but what if none of the candidates are what you want to represent you as is the case in many wards and constituencies all over the country at election time.

Perhaps, the reason why so many, other than those who cannot be bothered to vote are left with with no suitable candidates who they consider the right persons they want to represent them on the Council or in Parliament while others do not vote because one of the two main parties has a massive majority control of a Council or Parliament and see it as a waste of time voting!

Some kind of refom of the voting system is needed to make the election of Politicians at both national and local levels more representative of all the people and not just those who vote for the exsising two main parties as is the case at present in most of the constituencies and wards of a town and city.

Domination by one party, be it in Parliament or in a Council is not good Democracy for all the people!
